York National Railway Museum 2025
York’s National Railway Museum houses the UK’s largest collection of historic, record breaking locomotives and railway artefacts and it celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2025. Entrance to the museum is FREE and there’s almost always a workshop, tour or exhibition to make your visit to the railway museum a memorable day out.
For many, the first stop is the ‘Roundhouse’ or Great Locomotive Hall which houses the engines which became ‘champions of speed’ at the zenith of Britain’s Railways. Here you can see “Mallard” the World’s fastest steam locomotive. Mallard and others of the same class would once have sped through Naburn Railway Station on the Northern route.
The museum will also re-open its magnificent ‘Station Hall’ exhibit in the spring. This is a fascinating retro-journey to the time most of us travelled on holiday by train. Station hall is also where you can see Royal Trains. Free audio guides have been added to the museum and are available for your own Smartphone.
Rail enthusiasts will be making tracks to York National Railway Museum so why not put the railway museum on your ‘must do’ list when staying at York Naburn Lock Caravan Park? The Railway Museum is in Leeman Road, a short walk from York Railway Station.
