York National Railway Museum 2026
York’s National Railway Museum houses the UK’s largest collection of historic, record breaking locomotives and railway artefacts. Entrance to the museum is FREE and there’s almost always a workshop, tour or exhibition to make your visit to the railway museum a memorable day out.
For many, the first stop is the ‘Roundhouse’ or Great Locomotive Hall. Here you can view the engines which became ‘champions of speed’ at the zenith of Britain’s Railways including “Mallard” the World’s fastest steam locomotive. Mallard and others of the same class would once have sped through Naburn Railway Station on the Northern route.

The museum’s magnificent ‘Station Hall’ exhibit is now open featuring Queen Victoria’s lavish ‘Royal Train’, truly “a palace on wheels”. This is a fascinating retro-journey to the time many of us travelled on holiday by train. Free audio guides have been added to the museum and are available for your own Smartphone.
Rail enthusiasts will be making tracks to York National Railway Museum so why not put the railway museum on your ‘must do’ list when staying at York Naburn Lock Caravan Park? The Railway Museum is in Leeman Road, a short walk from the ‘Coastliner’ bus stop opposite York Railway Station.
