York’s frequently grizzly history has given the city notoriety as Europe’s most Haunted City! It’s not all scary stuff though. You could bring your pumpkins and celebrate All Hallows Eve on your touring pitch. If you are passing Naburn Village at twilight over the weekend, look out for pumkins in the windows of some of the houses. There are no recorded hauntings here, but should you hear an eerie ‘twooooo’. That will just be Bertie the barn owl. He hoots around Naburn Hall all year-round.
For serious hauntings, you’ll need to go into York City. The most haunted building is the York Museum. You won’t be surprised. Many infamous criminals were held in the adjacent prison before taking a one way journey to Tyburn Gibbet. Three of York’s Inn’s are famous for supernatural ‘nocturnal’ guests. The Roman Baths, Ye Olde Starre Inn and York’s most haunted, The Golden Fleece pub, close to the Naburn 42 service bus stop.
